Nintendo has just concluded a landmark Direct presentation, delivering a torrent of exciting announcements for both the Nintendo Switch and its upcoming successor, the Switch 2. The event provided a clear roadmap for the company’s next year, including the first details of how it plans to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros.

Among the highlights were a long-awaited release date for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, the grand reveal of a new Fire Emblem title, and confirmation that the beloved Super Mario Galaxy games are coming to Switch 2. Nintendo also announced that the sequel to the blockbuster animated film will be The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, set for a 2026 release.

From a cozy Pokémon life-sim to a physical remake of the Virtual Boy, this presentation was packed with reveals. Here is a comprehensive breakdown of every major announcement from the September 2025 Nintendo Direct.

After years of anticipation, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will officially launch for the Nintendo Switch on December 4, 2025. A new gameplay trailer showcased Samus Aran navigating the world of Viewros, utilizing psychic abilities and a stylish new motorcycle called the Vi-O-La to overcome challenges.

To accompany the launch, Nintendo announced a new line of amiibo figures. A Samus and Vi-O-La set will be available on November 6, followed by a figure of the “enigmatic bounty hunter” Sylux on December 4. For fans eager for more from the series, a retrospective art book titled Metroid Prime 1-3: A Visual Retrospective will be released on October 28, featuring concept drawings and behind-the-scenes illustrations.

The Direct’s final reveal was Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, a new mainline entry in the strategy RPG series, slated for release in 2026. The debut trailer introduced a cast of new characters, including a young warrior named Cai fighting to save his father, a queen named Theodora, and a formidable swordsman named Dietrich.

The story appears to revolve around the “Heroic Games,” a grand tournament where the Divine Sovereign will grant a single wish to the final victor. This narrative hook promises a story filled with political intrigue and high-stakes conflict.

As part of the Super Mario Bros. 40th-anniversary celebration, Nintendo announced a bundled physical and digital release of Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Switch, arriving on October 2, 2025. The collection will feature enhanced resolution, an in-game music player, improved UI, and the option for either motion or traditional controls. A free update will enable 4K resolution when played on the Switch 2.

In addition, two new amiibo figures—Mario & Luma and Rosalina & Lumas—will be released on April 2, 2026.

Following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the sequel has been officially titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and is scheduled to hit theaters on April 3, 2026. A brief teaser confirmed the return of the main cast and offered a glimpse of Princess Peach’s castle before soaring into the cosmos to reveal Luma.

Available now, the Donkey Kong Bananza: DK Island & Emerald Rush paid DLC expands the recently released Switch 2 title with new content. The DLC introduces DK Island, a new level filled with nostalgic references to the franchise’s history.

It also adds Emerald Rush, a new challenge mode where players must farm Emeralds for Void Kong. This mode features timed mini-goals, unlockable perks, and Banandium Gems that grant DK new skills. Completing challenges will also unlock new cosmetic items and collectible statues for display on DK Island.

A new spin-off, Pokémon Pokopia, was announced for the Switch. This cozy life-sim and farming game stars a Ditto who has taken on a human-like form. Players will partner with Pokémon to cultivate the land: Bulbasaur’s Leafage helps grow grass, Squirtle’s Water Gun waters crops, Scyther can be taught to clear trees, and Hitmonchan can help with construction. Players can build homes for Pokémon, grow crops, and design their ideal landscape when the game launches in 2026.

In one of the Direct’s most surprising announcements, Nintendo is releasing a physical recreation of the Virtual Boy. This new accessory allows players to insert their Switch console into a headset to experience a library of 14 classic games, including Mario’s Tennis, Galactic Pinball, and Teleroboxer.

The Virtual Boy accessory will be available on February 17, 2026, for $99.99, with a cardboard version also available for $24.99. The games will be accessible to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members.

The presentation was filled with updates and reveals for a wide range of titles coming to both Switch and Switch 2.
